Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) sharply criticized the independence of the Justice Department, declaring he has “no faith in Donald Trump’s judicial system” following the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey.

Speaking on this morning’s Meet the Press with moderator Kristen Welker, Schumer reacted to the news that Comey was indicted for allegedly lying to the Senate in 2020. When asked if he had faith in the judicial system—a question posed after Welker’s conversation with Leader Thune, who advocated letting the process play out—Schumer blasted the President.

“I have no faith in Donald Trump’s judicial system,” Schumer stated. “He has turned this judicial system to be his own political fighter, do what he wants politically, so that he tells them to go after people he doesn’t like. He tells them to exonerate people that he likes.”

Schumer pointed to a pattern of alleged political interference, citing a flurry of pardons and, specifically, the Comey case. The Senator claimed that the administration fired a prosecutor who initially found “not enough evidence to indict Comey” and replaced them with someone who would “do whatever he wanted.”

“He has turned this Justice Department into his own political watchdog. It’s horrible. No president has done this. This is what autocrats do,” Schumer asserted, equating the action to the behavior of a monarch. “This is when Trump says he wants to be King to do it. And so when he says he doesn’t like Comey, looked what happened there… Trump’s done so many bad things to undermine our democracy, to undermine our norms. This is one of the very worst.”

The indictment of the former FBI director marks the latest development in a deeply polarized political landscape, drawing immediate and strong reactions from the nation’s top political figures.
