Republican strategist Scott Jennings offered a blunt forecast for the burgeoning Texas Senate race this week, predicting that U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett will secure the Democratic nomination but ultimately fail to unseat incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the general election.

Speaking on the “Spot On with Link Lauren” podcast on Wednesday, Jennings analyzed the primary matchup between Crockett and Democratic Texas state Rep. James Talarico. Crockett formally announced her bid to challenge Cornyn on Monday, setting up a high-profile contest within the party.

Jennings argued that while Talarico may be the preferred choice of establishment operatives, Crockett’s visibility and alignment with the party’s base give her a decisive edge in the primary.

“She cannot win a general election. But can she win a Democratic primary? Yes, because that’s what the base of the Democratic Party wants,” Jennings said. He described Crockett as the “face of the Democratic Party,” noting her frequent media appearances and strong following on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

However, Jennings suggested that the very qualities fueling her popularity with the base would become liabilities in a statewide general election in Texas. He characterized her appeal as limited to an “online world” rather than the broader electorate needed to flip a Senate seat in a historically red state.

“Her constituents have nothing to do with the people she represents,” Jennings claimed. “She lives in a world where you can say anything, whether it’s true or not, and then deny everything you said, even though you did say it.”

Jennings referenced recent controversies involving the Congresswoman to support his assessment. In November, Crockett faced scrutiny after falsely suggesting on the House floor that EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin received donations from deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein; the donations were actually from a different individual with the same name. She later stated on CNN that she “wasn’t trying to mislead people.”

Additionally, comments Crockett made in a December 2024 Vanity Fair profile regarding Latino voters and illegal immigration have drawn criticism. When asked about the remarks during a recent interview with Jake Tapper, Crockett disputed the characterization that she had attributed a “slave mentality” to those voters, despite Tapper quoting the article.

Jennings pointed to these incidents as evidence of a communication style that, while effective for garnering attention, might alienate general election voters.

“It’s very embarrassing, but for some reason, Democrats have embraced this communication style as their future,” Jennings concluded. “And so, I actually think she’s going to win that primary. I think she’s going to get beat in the general election.”

The Texas primary will test whether Jennings’ theory holds true: that the energy of the online base can power a candidate through the nomination, even if traditional strategists fear a ceiling in November.
