PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – A joint recovery operation between two local law enforcement agencies ended Sunday with the discovery of human remains in the waters near a major Pinellas County artery.
Deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office converged on the area where Interstate 275 meets 4th Street North to retrieve the body from the local waterway.
The scene, which sits near the gateway between St. Petersburg and the Howard Frankland Bridge, was cleared after the remains were successfully recovered and transported to land.

As of this evening, the identity of the deceased remains a mystery. Authorities confirmed that the body is now in the custody of the Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office, where specialists will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death and work toward a positive identification.
“Positive identification of the remains has not been determined at this time,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office stated, noting that the investigation is still in its earliest stages.
Police have not yet released information regarding the gender, age, or how long the remains may have been in the water. No further details were provided.
