New York City police flooded the streets surrounding Gracie Mansion on Tuesday afternoon following reports of a suspicious device discovered near the mayoral residence. The heavy police presence comes just three days after federal authorities charged two young men for detonating a homemade explosive in what investigators described as an ISIS-inspired attack in the same Upper East Side neighborhood.
The NYPD confirmed in a social media post that a “confirmed device” was located and remains under active investigation. While the term indicates an object of concern was found, its exact nature has not yet been verified by technical teams.
A senior law enforcement official speaking to NBC 4 News noted that investigators are still working to determine if the item is a functional explosive, a deliberate hoax, or simply discarded materials that appeared threatening.
Officers cordoned off a significant portion of the area near Carl Schurz Park, designating the residential streets as a crime scene. Pedestrians and motorists were advised to avoid the vicinity while the bomb squad and emergency units assessed the risk.
The security scare follows the Saturday arrests of 19-year-old Ibrahim Kayumi and 18-year-old Emir Balat. The two Pennsylvania residents currently face federal charges for allegedly igniting a device near Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s home over the weekend.
Law enforcement sources said it is currently unclear whether the device found Tuesday is linked to the previous suspects or represents an unrelated incident.
The NYPD has not reported any injuries or structural damage.
