A night of networking and political tradition turned into a frantic scene of duck-and-cover Saturday as Secret Service agents tackled an armed man attempting to force his way into the Washington Hilton ballroom.
The incident, which occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, led to the immediate evacuation of President Donald Trump and his cabinet members after security personnel opened fire on the intruder.
The suspect, identified by law enforcement and media reports as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, reportedly bypassed initial hotel security by checking in as a guest.
While the hotel had been closed to the general public since 2:00 PM, Allen’s status as a guest allegedly allowed him to remain on the premises before the gala began. Security footage later shared by the president showed the suspect sprinting past a secondary checkpoint where officers were in the process of disassembling magnetometers.
“A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service,” Trump said during a late-night press conference at the White House. The president characterized the event as an attack by a “would-be assassin,” though he noted that investigators currently believe the suspect acted as a “lone wolf.”

Allen, a resident of Torrance, California, has a background that spans education and technology.
Public records and social media profiles describe him as a mechanical engineer and computer scientist who recently worked as a private tutor, even earning a “Teacher of the Month” award in late 2024.
While his motives remain under investigation, federal campaign records show he contributed $25 to a Democratic political action committee supporting Kamala Harris in 2024.
The chaotic scene saw hundreds of formally dressed guests diving under tables as Secret Service teams swarmed the subterranean ballroom.
Despite the breach, Secret Service Director Sean Curran defended the evening’s protocols, stating that the “multilayered protection works.”
However, critics and observers have raised questions regarding how an armed individual managed to stay in the hotel and reach the inner perimeter of a high-profile event featuring the commander-in-chief.
This incident follows a series of threats and attempts against the president’s life over the last two years, including the 2024 shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, and a thwarted plot at his Florida golf course.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed Sunday that Allen had traveled by train from the West Coast specifically for the event and was carrying both guns and knives.
The suspect is expected to remain in custody and face multiple federal charges on Monday.
