For all the platitudes liberals mumble about how intolerance, oppression, and racial supremacy undermine human rights in America, it’s incredibly difficult to get them to abandon support for communist China, the most oppressive regime in the world.
But U.S. Sen. Rick Scott keeps trying to convince them otherwise.
First, we had woke NBA players last year kneeling for the National Anthem while refusing to support democratic activists in Hong Kong – who, by the way, proudly sung the “Star-Spangled Banner” in the faces of their tormentors.
Last week, Major League Baseball announced it was relocating the annual All-Star Game out of Georgia because of a new election-integrity law championed by Republicans – one day after it inked a new contract with a Chinese tech firm to stream baseball games into China.
In response to that, Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky tweeted, “Your sports league might be a little too woke if it will freely do business with Communists in China and Cuba, but boycotts a US state that wants people to show an ID to vote.”
Then, Jen Psaki, President Joe Biden’s spokeswoman, got snippy when a reporter asked if Biden would have the U.S. pull out of the 2022 Olympics in China because of its dreadful human rights record – a reasonable question after Biden said Chinese President Xi Jinping doesn’t have a “democratic bone” in his body.
“I don’t know if you heard the question, the answer that happened a few minutes ago where we addressed this and I answered the question and I gave a little more context, but maybe you weren’t paying attention to that part,” Psaki shot back.
But Sen. Scott, a Florida Republican, has already encouraged Biden to abandon the Winter Olympics in Beijing next year over human rights abuses.
Last week he wrote a letter to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, saying “It is my hope that your government joins the U.S. to call these crimes what they are – genocide. In the midst of these human rights atrocities, as well as economic and national security challenges, we must all join together to stand up to dictators like General Secretary Xi.”
Scott continued, “I encourage you to join me in calling on the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to move the 2022 Olympics Games out of Beijing. Governments and international organizations have the ability and responsibility to address human rights concerns, and calling on the IOC to move the 2022 Olympics Games out of Beijing is the right course of action.”
“To be clear, I do not support a boycott. Boycotting these games will only hurt athletes who have spent their lives training to represent their country on the international stage,” Scott added. “Instead, it should be the position of all democratic nations that the IOC can and should move the 2022 Games to a nation that respects human rights.”
“The Olympic Games give the world’s best athletes a chance to represent their countries and unite our nations. However, this cannot be achieved if we ignore the grotesque abuses of Communist China and allow the games to be hosted in Beijing, putting the safety of all athletes and attendees at risk,” the senator concluded.
“Working together, we can seize this opportunity to highlight our shared belief in freedom and democracy, while preserving the marvel that is and must always be so perfectly captured by the unity created by the Olympic Games.”
In addition to Biden, Scott has directed similar letters to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
