Senate “Fight Club”: Sanders, Warren Lead Revolt Against Schumer’s 2026 Strategy

A rift within the Senate Democratic caucus has formalized into a new coalition dubbed the “Fight Club,” a group of progressive senators organizing to challenge Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and his recruitment strategy for the upcoming midterms.

According to a report by the New York Times, the coalition includes Independent Senator Bernie Sanders and Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Chris Murphy (Conn.), Chris Van Hollen (Md.), and Tina Smith (Minn.).

The group is taking aim at the perceived establishment bias of Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, the fellow New Yorker currently heading the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).

The friction centers on how the party selects candidates for key open seats. The “Fight Club” contends that leadership is effectively clearing the field for establishment favorites rather than allowing grassroots candidates to compete.

The group is reportedly countering the DSCC by coordinating joint fundraising, sharing donor lists, and making independent endorsements in contested primaries.

The divide is most prominent in three states:

  • Michigan: While leadership favors Rep. Haley Stevens, Sanders and his allies are backing former public health official Abdul El-Sayed.
  • Maine: The coalition supports oyster farmer Graham Platner—who has notably called for Schumer’s ouster—over leadership favorite Gov. Janet Mills.
  • Minnesota: The group (excluding retiring Senator Smith) has endorsed Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, defying leadership’s preference for Rep. Angie Craig.

This internal rebellion comes at a vulnerable moment for Schumer. The Minority Leader is grappling with his lowest approval ratings in decades and facing backlash from the party’s left flank over recent legislative compromises and his refusal to endorse Zohran Mamdani, a socialist candidate for New York City Mayor.

Adding to the pressure, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has remained non-committal regarding a potential primary challenge against Schumer in 2028, despite polls showing her with a double-digit lead over the veteran senator.

Schumer’s office has attempted to minimize the strategic divergence. Alex Nguyen, a spokesperson for the leader, stated, “Our North Star is winning the Senate Majority in 2026 and any decision is made to achieve that goal.”
