A Florida drug trafficker, Samantha Jean James, was sentenced last week to 15 years in state prison as a Habitual Felony Offender (HFO) on multiple narcotics charges. The 28-year-old defendant, who has a history of arrests in the county dating back to 2016, received the sentence in connection with three separate drug cases.

Rather than entering a plea agreement, James pleaded straight to the court, waiving her right to a jury trial and allowing the court to determine her guilt and sentence. She was adjudicated guilty across all three cases.

The most severe sentences, all set at 15 years in prison as an HFO, stem from Trafficking in Methamphetamine charges. In the first two cases, James sold trafficking amounts of methamphetamine to a confidential informant.

For the first case, involving 28 grams or more of meth, she was also hit with a $100,000 fine and a 6-month driver’s license suspension. The second trafficking charge, involving 14 grams or more, included a $50,000 fine and a second 6-month license suspension.

The third case involved James selling methamphetamine to both a confidential informant and an undercover law enforcement officer. This case resulted in 15-year HFO sentences for Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell or Deliver and Sale or Delivery of a Controlled Substance, as well as a 10-year HFO sentence for Unlawful Use of a Communication Device.

In total, James was convicted on multiple counts of drug trafficking and delivery, but all prison sentences were ordered to run concurrently, resulting in a total incarceration period of 15 years. She was also given credit for 338 days served on a charge of Possession of Paraphernalia.

Assistant State Attorney Nolan Deming prosecuted the cases, which were investigated by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division. The defendant currently has an additional, pending drug trafficking case. James’s most recent arrest on these charges occurred on March 24 of this year.
