A man was saved from jumping off of a bridge in Florida when several Good Samaritans stopped to offer the man assistance.

Thursday, shortly before 10 a.m. law enforcement received numerous calls of a potential jumper on Memorial Bridge in Putnam County.

According to deputies, the man was sitting on the railing of the bridge near the top with a knife in his hand. Several motorists had pulled over to try to talk to the man.

Prior to law enforcement officers arriving on the scene, several good samaritans grabbed the man from behind and held him down.

Palatka Police Officers and Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrived and were able to place the man into custody and have him evaluated by mental health professionals.

“While we do not encourage residents to take this type of action and place themselves in life-threatening danger, we want to take this opportunity to thank them for their self-sacrifice and their compassion in saving their fellow man,” said Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

“We hope that the gentleman who was contemplating this drastic action is able to get the help he needs as well,” said PCSO.

Emergencies are stressful events for both the mind and body. However, it’s the people who rise above to help others that show what a great community we have.
