LAKELAND, Fla. – The deputy-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon on Saturn Street in Lakeland has tragically resulted in the death of the suspect, identified as Kentae Govan, a registered sex offender with a history of violent crime.
The incident, which took place on the 1900 Block of Saturn Street, began just after 3:00 p.m. with a violent attack that left several people injured before deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) arrived on the scene.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect, Kentae Govan, allegedly struck an elderly man in the head with a brick.
When a woman intervened and pushed Govan away, he chased her into a shed, beat her, and stole her phone to prevent her from calling authorities. Deputies issued commands for Govan to drop the brick, but he allegedly refused and charged at the officers. In response, deputies fired six shots.
Govan was transported by Polk Fire Rescue to Lakeland Regional Health for treatment, where he later died from his injuries. No deputies were injured during the violent encounter.
Kentae Govan had spent a total of 23 years in prison before this incident.
The 10th Judicial Circuit’s Officer-Involved Deadly Incident (OIDI) Task Force is conducting the full investigation into the use of deadly force by the deputies.
