A frantic string of 911 calls to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office led to the arrest of two parents after a simple ride home spiraled into what deputies described as carpool chaos on Sunday.
The victim, a 15-year-old Deltona resident, told authorities the entire situation started out as a favor for a friend. The teen was dropping the couple’s daughter off at her home on Sunday afternoon following an all-night party when her parents allegedly blocked him in and ambushed him.
Emergency dispatchers received tense 911 calls from both the victim and his mother, according to WSVN.
“Two adults assaulted my son — he’s 15, he’s a minor — and pulled a gun and a knife on him,” the teenager’s mother told the dispatcher.
The boy also spoke to emergency operators to report the attack. “She pointed a gun at me,” the teen said during his 911 call. “The stepdad, he pulled a knife on me.”
According to investigators, the stepfather, 61-year-old Lance Mulonas, used a white van to block the teenager’s car from behind so he could not escape the driveway. Mulonas then allegedly pulled out a metal pipe and began smashing it against the roof of the boy’s car. While the victim was trapped in the driver’s seat, Mulonas allegedly held a knife near the boy’s neck.
As the assault unfolded, the girl’s mother, 45-year-old Rosa Lamourt Tiru, allegedly stood directly in front of the vehicle while waving a handgun. At one point, she could be heard telling the boy, “You cannot go. The cops are coming.”
According to WSVN, Lamourt Tiru actually called 911 herself after the confrontation. While she admitted to dispatchers that a verbal argument had taken place, she explicitly denied that any physical attack occurred. However, when deputies arrived at the N. Normandy Boulevard home, Lamourt Tiru showed them her firearm, which perfectly matched the detailed description the teen had already given to police.
Deputies cuffed the couple, and the sheriff’s office bodycam captured the dialogue between the suspects and the arresting officers, reported by the outlet.
“It’s just one little seat,” Mulonas said on the video, referencing his positioning.
“Yeah, I know,” a deputy replied.
“Good thing I’m not a bigger guy,” Mulonas added while being detained. “I know you guys are siding for us, but we don’t know what’s going on.”
“Let me just double-check so I can lock them, just hang tight,” the deputy told him.
The bodycam footage also captured Lamourt Tiru’s reaction as she was placed into handcuffs.
“What did I do?” Lamourt Tiru asked.
“We’re going to explain that with the other part of the investigation. Right now, I just need you to put your hands together,” the deputy responded.
The parents later told detectives they genuinely believed the driver was an adult, claiming they only realized he was a 15-year-old minor after the encounter was over. The teen’s mother estimated the damage to her son’s car at roughly $4,000, and noted that her son was in fear for his life during the incident.
Tiru and Mulonas were transported to the Volusia County Jail, where they are currently being held without bond. The couple faces a slate of severe charges, including aggravated assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment, criminal mischief, and cruelty to a child. Their next scheduled court appearance is set for July 1.
