A mass shooting at a crowded local bar on St. Helena Island has left four people dead and at least 20 others injured, according to officials.
The incident unfolded early Sunday morning at Willie’s Bar and Grill. Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the scene and arrived to find a large crowd and numerous people suffering from gunshot wounds.
“Multiple victims and witnesses ran to the nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gun shots,” the Sheriff’s Office stated in a release on the social media platform X.
Four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. At least 20 other victims were injured and transported to area hospitals. Among the injured, officials reported that four are currently in critical condition, underscoring the severity of the attack.
“This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone. We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones,” the statement read.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased or the injured victims. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
