Short-Lived Career: Deputy In Florida Handcuffed And Fired After Family Fight

A probationary deputy with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is out of a job today after a Sunday arrest in Volusia County. Kaleem Chohan, who had been with the agency for less than a year, was taken into custody by the South Daytona Police Department and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery.

According to authorities, the arrest stemmed from an altercation involving a family member. Following the incident, the Sheriff’s Office moved quickly to suspend Chohan before officially terminating his employment on Monday. Chohan had originally joined the agency on April 30, 2025.

The agency issued a firm stance on the dismissal, citing a failure to uphold the core expectations of the department. Chief of Staff Mark Strobridge noted that Chohan’s actions during the dispute ran contrary to the very training he had recently received.

“His failure to de-escalate as he had been trained reflect a serious lapse in judgment that falls far below the standards expected of an employee,” Strobridge said. “This kind of behavior will not be tolerated and erodes public confidence. Deputies are expected to exercise sound judgment, self-control, and professionalism on and off duty.”

Chohan was being held at the Volusia County Jail. Records show his bond was set at $100.
