RIVERVIEW, Fla. – A 34-year-old man is behind bars this week following a violent confrontation over a rifle that left one person wounded and sparked a multi-day search across Hillsborough County.

The incident began on the evening of February 16, 2026, when neighbors near the 10300 block of Wine Press Avenue in Riverview called 911 to report the sound of screams and several gunshots. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds to both his face and his foot. Paramedics rushed the man to a local hospital, where officials confirmed his injuries were not life-threatening.

Detectives say the violence stemmed from a dispute over a weapon Cody Holmes had previously sold to a woman living at the residence. According to investigators, Holmes arrived at the home demanding the return of an AR-style rifle.

The victim reportedly handed over the firearm and collected the original purchase money from Holmes. However, the situation turned critical when Holmes allegedly loaded the rifle, demanded the cash back, and opened fire on the victim.

Following the shooting, Holmes and the woman fled the Riverview neighborhood before law enforcement could establish a perimeter. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office launched a search for the suspect that lasted nearly two days. On February 18, 2026, deputies tracked Holmes to a home in Tampa, where he was taken into custody without further incident.

Holmes now faces several serious charges, the most severe being Attempted Felony Murder. He remains in the custody of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as the legal process moves forward.
