CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. – A tragic near head-on collision on US-19 in Citrus County left one man dead and two other people hospitalized with serious injuries early Friday afternoon.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. on June 5, 2026, just south of West Merrivale Lane.
State troopers reported that a 30-year-old man from New Port Richey was driving a Chevy Silverado southbound on US-19 when he suddenly lost control of the pickup truck. The vehicle veered onto the outside shoulder of the highway. Investigators say the driver then overcorrected, causing the truck to shoot back across the southbound lanes, tear through the center median, and enter oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes.
At that moment, a GMC Savana truck, driven by a 50-year-old Homosassa man, was traveling northbound. The Silverado traveled directly into the path of the GMC truck, striking it nearly head-on.
The impact killed the 50-year-old driver of the GMC truck, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency crews rushed the driver of the Silverado to a local hospital with serious injuries. A passenger in the GMC truck, identified as a 59-year-old woman from Homosassa, also suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.
The Florida Highway Patrol has not released the names of those involved, and the investigation into the exact cause of the crash remains ongoing.
