A quiet Friday night in Mississippi turned into a nightmare for residents of West Point after a shooting spree across three different locations left at least six people dead.

Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott confirmed early Saturday morning that a suspect had been taken into custody following the violence. While authorities have not yet released the individual’s name or a potential motive, Scott assured residents that the immediate danger had passed.

“Law enforcement took an individual into custody,” Scott said in a statement posted to social media, noting there was “no longer a threat to our community.”

The bloodshed appears to have been widespread, with Scott telling reporters the shootings occurred at three separate scenes within the area.

We do have the individual in custody and no longer poses a threat to our community. I ask that you lift our victims and their families in your prayers Law Enforcement is busy investigating and will release an update as soon as possible.”

The investigation is ongoing.
