A Florida police officer is off the job and facing criminal charges after he allegedly punched his girlfriend in the mouth when she ended their relationship.
Miramar Police Sgt. Devarious Holloway, 32, is charged with misdemeanor battery and criminal mischief. According to the police affidavit, the incident occurred Friday evening at the victim’s Miami home after Holloway texted her to come outside, claiming, “My mom wants to talk to you.” The victim found the text suspicious because Holloway’s mother passed away in 2017.
When she walked outside, Holloway reportedly asked, “So we’re done?”
Fearing for her safety, the woman tried to walk to a relative’s house on the property, but Holloway went inside her home. When she followed him indoors, Holloway allegedly threw her phone, shoved her onto a couch, and punched her in the mouth when she tried to stand, cutting her lip.
During a subsequent struggle on the floor, Holloway allegedly kicked her in the leg. The victim managed to run to her bedroom and lock the door, but Holloway kicked the door until the frame shattered, demanding to know their relationship status while she begged for her phone. Holloway eventually left the premises after allegedly striking her in the chest one final time outside.
The victim reported the assault to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. Holloway turned himself in on Monday and later posted bond.
The Miramar Police Department confirmed Holloway has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation, stating:
“The Department acknowledges the matter referenced and has initiated a thorough administrative review… The Miramar Police Department remains steadfast in its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and ethical conduct.”
Holloway’s next court date is scheduled for August 26.
