Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggested Thursday that the upcoming meeting between New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and President Donald Trump is a strategic move intended to advance the city’s interests, despite the deep ideological chasm separating the two leaders.

Mamdani is set to meet the president at the White House on Friday at 3 pm. It will be the first face-to-face encounter between the incoming mayor and the president following Mamdani’s victory over independent candidate Andrew Cuomo earlier this month.

When asked on Capitol Hill about the implications of the sit-down, Ocasio-Cortez deferred to the mayor-elect’s judgment.

“Obviously, the mayor-elect is going to be preparing for his inauguration,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters. “Of course, he’s indicated that he’s willing to sit down with anybody and everybody. So we’ll see.”

High Tensions and Hostile Rhetoric

The meeting takes place against a backdrop of public hostility. During the campaign, President Trump frequently targeted Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, labeling him a “100% Communist Lunatic” and threatening to revoke federal funding for New York if he won.

Mamdani, who ran on a platform centered on affordability, directly addressed the president in his acceptance speech, declaring, “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.” Trump later criticized the remark as “very dangerous” and claimed Mamdani displayed anger toward him.

The tension appeared to persist in the president’s announcement of the meeting. Posting to Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump wrote: “Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran ‘Kwame’ Mamdani, has asked for a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st.”

Trump’s specific emphasis on Mamdani’s middle name, Kwame, drew comparisons to his long-standing habit of emphasizing the middle name of former President Barack Obama.

Focus on Affordability

Despite the rhetoric, Mamdani has framed the meeting as a necessary step to address the economic struggles of New Yorkers. Speaking to Chris Hayes on MS NOW Wednesday, the mayor-elect said he intends to bypass political feuds to discuss the cost of living.

“I want to just speak plainly to the president about what it means to actually stand up for New Yorkers and the way in which New Yorkers are struggling to afford this city,” Mamdani said.

He noted during a press briefing on Thursday that economic anxiety was a driving force for many voters, including those who supported the president.

“Frankly, cost of living is something that I heard time and time again from New Yorkers about why they voted for Donald Trump,” Mamdani said, citing concerns regarding childcare, utilities, rent, and public transit fares. “I want to make it clear to the president that this is what we’re talking about. These are the stakes for New Yorkers.”
