Somaliland Called…And Wants Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar Back Following Fraud Allegations

The Republic of Somaliland has publicly offered to coordinate with U.S. authorities on the potential extradition of Representative Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., following new allegations of immigration fraud leveled by Vice President JD Vance.

The exchange began after Vice President Vance appeared on a podcast with commentator Benny Johnson, where he stated that the administration is actively investigating the congresswoman.

“We think Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States of America,” Vance said during the interview. He noted that he has been in discussions with White House immigration advisor Stephen Miller to determine the appropriate “legal remedies” and how to build a case for potential prosecution.

Responding to these comments on the social media platform X, the government of Somaliland—a self-declared state in the Horn of Africa—indicated it was prepared to take custody of the lawmaker.

“Deportation? Please you’re just sending the princess back to her kingdom. Extradition? Say the word…” the official post read.

In a follow-up post, the Republic of Somaliland claimed to possess “receipts” regarding Omar’s background and fraud.

The post alleged that Omar’s original surname was Elmi and that her family used multiple identities to enter the United States. The statement further alleged that her father, whom they identified as a colonel in the Siad Barre regime, was involved in historical war crimes during the Isaaq Genocide.

Omar’s office has dismissed the claims as a political distraction.

Connor McNutt, Omar’s chief of staff, characterized the allegations as a “ridiculous lie” in a statement to Fox News Digital. McNutt suggested the accusations were an attempt to shift public attention away from “increasing gas prices and rapidly dropping polling numbers.”

The congresswoman has previously addressed similar allegations, including claims that she married her brother to facilitate his entry into the U.S., calling them “bigoted lies.”

In December, she stated on X that such accusations were part of a pattern of “regurgitating” falsehoods because her opponents lacked viable economic policies.

Somaliland’s involvement in the dispute follows a period of heightened tension between the region and the congresswoman. Earlier this year, Omar drew criticism from Somaliland officials after a speech in Minneapolis where she appeared to defend the territorial integrity of Somalia against Somaliland’s efforts for international recognition.

The Vice President has not yet provided a specific timeline for any formal legal action or responded to the offer of extradition from the Somaliland government.
