Some Early 2022 Assessments Show The GOP Is Gaining Momentum In Elections For Governor, Congress

The 2022 elections are 11 months away. But the Dumpster fire that is the Biden administration – along with runaway inflation, rampant crime in the streets, and the general woke agenda – is igniting opportunity for Republicans.

The influential, nonpartisan Cook Political Report illustrates how.

On Friday, the Cook Report announced retooled ratings for nine races for governor in 2022.

The authors shifted eight of them in favor of the GOP.

Cook’s new assessment of the races in Iowa and South Carolina shifted them from “Likely Republican” to “Solid Republican.” In Oregon and New Mexico, Cook’s thinking changed both from “Solid Democratic” to “Likely Democratic.”

Maine also moved right, going from “Likely Democratic” to “Leans Democratic,” as did Nevada, Michigan, and Wisconsin, which went from “Leans Democratic” to “Toss Up.”

Only New York bucked the trend. Cook rated it “Solidly Democratic,” a leftward tilt from “Likely Democratic.”

The announcement came one day after Cook re-evaluated the governors’ elections in Massachusetts and Georgia.

Massachusetts, like New York, was moving more liberal, as Cook graded it “Leans Democratic” from “Solid Republican.” Yet in Georgia, Cook went the other way, trading “Toss Up” for “Leans Republican.” Curiously, that assessment came a day after former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, who has maintained the 2018 governor’s election was stolen from her, announced a second bid.

The more recent reports build on one from two weeks ago, when Cook had declared that three Senate elections, all featuring Democratic incumbents, turned from “Leans Democratic” to “Toss Up.” Those states include Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada.

Meanwhile, a Real Clear Politics poll shows that on a generic ballot in congressional elections Republicans hold a 45-42 advantage. That was as of Nov. 30. Just 18 days earlier, Democrats still held the lead on such a generic ballot.
