South Carolina Gamecocks Icon, Florida Native Stephen Garcia, Faces Stage 4 Cancer Battle

TAMPA, Fla. – Lutz native and former University of South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia has moved his latest fight from the football field to the hospital wing following a diagnosis of stage 4 colorectal cancer.

Garcia, a well-known figure in the Tampa area where he currently coaches young athletes, received the news after an emergency room visit and an intensive series of diagnostic tests, including CT scans and MRIs.

To combat the advanced stage of the disease, medical professionals have placed Garcia on an aggressive treatment protocol known as FOLFIRINOX. This heavy-duty chemotherapy regimen has started, marking the first step in a long-term medical plan that will eventually involve consultations with specialized liver and colon surgeons.

The community has rallied around the local coach, launching a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the mounting costs of his medical care. While the primary goal is to support Garcia’s recovery, the organizers are also using the platform to advocate for public health awareness.

“Colorectal cancer is often silent in its early stages,” the GoFundMe statement reads. “We cannot stress enough how important it is to prioritize regular screenings and colonoscopies. These preventative measures are life-saving tools that can catch issues before they progress. If Stephen’s story can encourage even one person to schedule their screening, it adds a greater purpose to this difficult fight.”

As Garcia focuses entirely on his treatment, his supporters emphasized that the messages of encouragement and financial contributions serve as vital reminders that he is not fighting the illness in isolation.

There are no current timelines for his return to the coaching sidelines as the focus remains strictly on the upcoming rounds of chemotherapy and surgical evaluations.
