Donnie Ray Birchfield, Jr., who was already facing numerous felony charges related to the alleged captivity and abuse of four vulnerable adults, has now been charged with murder and First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct in connection with the death of one of the victims, 49-year-old Shirley Arnsdorff of Lancaster, South Carolina.

The updated charges were announced on Friday by the Lancaster Police Department. Birchfield, 35, of Lancaster, is currently being held without bond at the Lancaster County Detention Center.

Escalation of Charges

The investigation began on July 25, 2025, after officers were dispatched to 425 Churchill Drive for a death report and found Ms. Arnsdorff unresponsive. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Initially, on August 1, 2025, Birchfield was charged with Two Counts of Neglect of a Vulnerable Adult and Four Counts of False Imprisonment after investigators developed evidence that a crime had occurred.

Authorities determined Ms. Arnsdorff’s death was not unattended, and through subsequent investigation, they learned she and three other individuals were allegedly being held captive in the home’s basement by Birchfield.

The victims were reportedly abused, denied food and medical care, and cut off from outside contact.

Further charges were filed throughout August and September, including:

  • Two Counts of DVHAN (Domestic Violence High and Aggravated Nature) and Four Counts of False Imprisonment (August 6).
  • Financial Transaction Card Theft, Exploitation of a vulnerable adult, and Financial Identity Fraud (August 25 and September 3), stemming from allegations that Birchfield used the couple’s credit and debit cards for personal purchases totaling thousands of dollars since 2021.

The new charges of Murder and 1st Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct were brought on October 17 after an ongoing investigation by the Lancaster Police Department’s Special Operations Unit uncovered evidence linking Birchfield to the victim’s death.

Police Chief Calls Case “Heartbreaking”

Police Chief Don Roper released a statement acknowledging the profound effect the case has had on the community.

“This is a heartbreaking case that has profoundly impacted our community,” Chief Roper stated. “The Lancaster Police Department is dedicated to achieving justice for the victim and her family. We extend our sincerest condolences to the victim’s family and hope that we can bring them some peace through justice.”

The victims, according to warrants, included Ms. Arnsdorff and her husband—both vulnerable adults for whom Birchfield was the sole caregiver—as well as two women who were allegedly in romantic relationships with him. Court documents indicate the victims suffered regular physical abuse, including strangulation, and were only allowed to leave the basement when Birchfield permitted.

The case is an ongoing collaborative investigation involving the Lancaster Police Department, the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit, and the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office.
