A political firestorm is brewing on Capitol Hill as Republican lawmakers are pushing for formal disciplinary action against Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) for her controversial remarks following the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

On Monday, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) announced a resolution to censure Omar and remove her from her positions on the House Committee on Education and Workforce and the Budget Committee. Mace stated she would file a privileged motion on Tuesday, which would force the House to vote on the measure as early as this week.

“She is inciting violence against conservatives in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s political assassination,” Mace said in a video filmed outside Omar’s office. “She is dehumanizing conservatives all across the country, calling Charlie Kirk a terrorist.”

Mace’s actions come in response to a series of comments made by Omar following Kirk’s death on Wednesday. During an interview with Zeteo News’ Mehdi Hasan, Omar stated it was “f-ed up” for Americans to memorialize Kirk for his “good works,” adding that “there is nothing more f-ed up than to completely pretend that his words and actions have not been recorded.” She also reposted a video that characterized Kirk as a “reprehensible human being” and a “stochastic terrorist.”

The video, which has been widely circulated, describes Kirk as a figure who “enacted his political agenda by preying on weak-minded people” and who “believed in the subjugation of women.” The video further claims that with his “last dying words he was spewing racist dog whistles.”

Omar’s comments have drawn sharp criticism from Republicans. In addition to Mace’s resolution, Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) also introduced a separate measure on Monday to oust Omar from her two committees.

The move to censure Omar follows a recent failure by Republicans to strip Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) of her committee assignment. Five GOP lawmakers joined Democrats in defeating a resolution against McIver, who is alleged to have assaulted law enforcement officers. The outcome of the resolutions against Omar remains uncertain.

Speaker Mike Johnson indicated on Monday that he had not yet decided whether to hold a vote on either measure, stating, “We’ll have to talk about it, I haven’t even seen them yet.” The unfolding situation highlights the deep partisan divisions within Congress and the heightened tensions following Kirk’s assassination.
