A South Carolina man will spend the next three decades behind bars after a federal judge sentenced him yesterday for a brutal sex trafficking scheme that targeted a 15-year-old girl.

Johnny Thiel Banks, 30, of Summerville, received a 33-year prison sentence following his conviction on numerous charges, including sex trafficking of a minor by force, fraud, and coercion, as well as weapons violations.

According to evidence presented at trial, the abuse took place during July 2024. Prosecutors detailed how Banks transported the victim—identified in court records only as Jane Doe—from North Carolina to Virginia multiple times. Jane Doe had just finished the eighth grade.

Once in Virginia, Banks forced the teenager into commercial sex work at various locations across Hampton Roads, including truck stops, gas stations, and hotels in Suffolk and Virginia Beach.

Court records describe a campaign of terror used to keep the girl compliant. Banks repeatedly threatened both the victim and her family. When Jane Doe hesitated to return to Virginia to engage in prostitution, Banks threatened to leave her “floating in a creek.” He also compelled her to pose for and send him child sexual abuse material.

The scheme unraveled on July 31, 2024. That night, Banks, armed with a handgun, took the girl to a hotel in Virginia Beach to traffic her. An argument ensued, during which Banks strangled the teenager. She managed to call a family member for help, sparking a rapid police response.

Officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department located Jane Doe in a hotel parking garage after receiving reports she was missing from Charlotte. As police were speaking with the victim, Banks walked by the scene and was detained.

A subsequent search of Banks’ rental vehicle revealed a loaded handgun. As a convicted felon, Banks is prohibited from possessing firearms. Investigators also seized three cellphones containing evidence of the trafficking and sexual abuse material.

“Banks’ treatment of his victim reflects an absolute disregard for humanity,” said U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan following the sentencing. “No person should be subject to such vile actions. This sentence will help to ensure that Banks cannot inflict similar harm on additional victims.”

The case was investigated by the Virginia Beach Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative.
