TAMPA, Fla. – Drivers in South Tampa are facing a sudden detour this evening.

The Tampa Water Department has completely shut down the intersection of South MacDill Avenue and West Azeele Street effective immediately. Crews are back on the scene to finish what they started earlier—executing a permanent restoration of the roadway following a previous water main break.

This isn’t just a partial lane closure; the entire intersection is currently blocked off to traffic.

Barricades and detour signs are already in place to guide motorists around the work zone, but officials are urging anyone who normally takes this route to find an alternate path if possible.

The city expects to have the roads reopened and traffic returning to normal by 11:59 p.m. tonight. However, that timeline depends on the weather holding up.

Officials also noted this might not be the absolute end of the project. While they hope to wrap up the heavy lifting tonight, crews may need to return at a later date for additional site work.
