WASHINGTON, DC. – A Southeastern University (SEU) student, Justin Aguilar, recently took a stand for religious freedom by testifying before President Donald Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission. The hearing, held at the Museum of the Bible, focused on challenges to religious expression in public education, drawing witnesses from across the country, including students, parents, and community leaders.

Aguilar was one of 16 individuals to share his personal experience with the commission, which included President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi.

He recounted his journey as a high school valedictorian in North Carolina, where he faced a significant challenge to his right to freedom of speech. During his testimony, Aguilar explained that a school administrator attempted to censor his valedictorian speech by removing references to God and Jesus.

Supported by the non-profit legal group Liberty Council, Aguilar successfully appealed the censorship, delivering his original, faith-filled speech. His message resonated with many, receiving positive feedback from school staff and fellow students.

“I was truly blessed to be able to praise the name of Jesus before the commission and to share with others what it looks like to stand for Him when faced with adversity,” Aguilar stated. He emphasized that school districts should not fear religious speech, and his experience is a testament to the importance of protecting First Amendment rights.

Now a Christian Ministry student at SEU Carolina, one of the university’s partner sites, Aguilar believes his advocacy is a part of his calling. “God has opened up a lot of doors for me,” he said. “I am certain that advocating for freedom of religious speech is part of my calling, and I’m excited to see where that takes me next.”
