Sparklers Blamed As Swiss Resort Fire Kills 40, Triggers Criminal Probe

A criminal investigation is underway following a catastrophic fire at an upscale Swiss ski resort that has claimed roughly 40 lives and left 115 others injured.

The blaze erupted shortly after midnight on Thursday at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, turning a crowded New Year’s celebration into a tragedy. Investigators now believe the inferno began when sparkler candles attached to champagne bottles ignited the ceiling, triggering a “flashover”—a phenomenon where heat builds up so rapidly that a room and its contents erupt in flame almost simultaneously.

The intensity of the fire has made the aftermath particularly grim. Authorities report that identifying the victims is proving extremely difficult due to the severity of the burns. Many of those killed were young people from various nations across Europe who had gathered for the holiday festivities.

With local medical facilities overwhelmed by the volume of casualties, many of the injured are being airlifted to specialist burns units throughout Europe for urgent care.

Swiss prosecutors have ruled out a terror attack but have launched a criminal inquiry to determine culpability. The investigation is now zeroing in on potential negligence, specifically examining recent renovation work, the building materials used, licensing compliance, and the venue’s safety protocols.

Families of the missing continue to face an agonizing wait as forensic teams work to identify the victims.
