LARGO, Fla. – Residents looking to maximize their charitable giving have a strict 24-hour window to make twice the difference for local animals. SPCA Tampa Bay kicked off its annual Day of Giving on Thursday, Dec. 4, announcing that all monetary gifts made before midnight will be matched dollar-for-dollar by sponsors.
The fundraising push comes as the agency looks to bolster resources for its year-round operations, which include sheltering surrendered pets and rehabilitating injured wildlife.
Unlike chapters of national organizations, SPCA Tampa Bay operates as an independent animal welfare agency. Officials emphasized that funds raised during this campaign stay in the region to support the more than 8,000 animals that move through their intake, transfer, and wildlife programs annually. The organization has been a fixture in the community for over 85 years.

According to the agency, the “Day of Giving” model allows even modest contributions to have a measurable impact on operations. Under the matching structure:
- A $10 donation turns into $20 worth of pet food for community distribution.
- $50 becomes $100, covering a full day of food, shelter, and veterinary care for an animal at the Largo facility.
- $100 doubles to fund essential vaccines and medical treatments.
Beyond the shelter walls, the funds also support initiatives designed to keep pets with their families during tough economic times. In addition to running monthly vaccine clinics and five stationary food pantries, the agency recently launched a mobile pet food pantry to reach more residents in need.
The donation matching period is active only for today, Dec. 4.
