A Fort Myers man found out the hard way that Florida’s fishing boundaries and size limits are strictly enforced this weekend.
While patrolling near the Long Key Bridge at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Marine Deputy Willie Guerra spotted 50-year-old Randy Charles Lyres spearfishing. The activity was occurring within 100 yards of a public fishing bridge, which is designated as a prohibited area under state law.
Upon inspecting Lyres’ catch, Deputy Guerra discovered he was in possession of two undersized hogfish.
Guerra issued Lyres a mandatory notice to appear in court for the undersized fish, along with official warnings for spearfishing in a restricted zone.
