ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A high-speed collision late Saturday night left one man dead and four others injured after a driver ran a red light at a busy St. Petersburg intersection.

The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. on December 27 at the intersection of North Frontage Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North.

According to investigators, a silver Mitsubishi Outlander was traveling northbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North with a green light. As the SUV entered the intersection, it was struck by a blue Dodge Charger traveling westbound on North Frontage Road.

Police say the driver of the Charger, identified as 31-year-old Izell Shelby of St. Petersburg, was speeding and failed to stop at the red traffic signal before slamming into the Mitsubishi.

Emergency responders rushed Shelby to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities noted that speed and the failure to wear a seatbelt were significant factors in his death.

The driver of the Mitsubishi and her three passengers were also transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital. All four are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Following the crash, investigators determined that Shelby was driving with a suspended Florida license and had an active warrant out for his arrest at the time of the incident.
