A Texas mother is facing over a dozen felony charges after authorities say she crashed her SUV into a pole while intoxicated, injuring her six children who were riding with her.

Brittany Winston, 31, is currently being held on a $600,000 bond. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has charged her with 14 counts in total: two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle, six counts of injury to a child, and six counts of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

The Crash Details

The incident unfolded around 1:40 p.m. last Friday. According to reports reviewed by the San Antonio Express-News, Winston was driving a Ford Explorer along Binz-Engleman Road on the eastern edge of San Antonio.

Investigators say the vehicle drifted off the roadway and slammed into a pole while traveling at a “high rate of speed.” Forensic data recovered from the vehicle later indicated Winston was driving more than 20 mph over the posted 45 mph speed limit. Authorities noted that neither Winston nor any of the six children inside were wearing seatbelts at the time of impact.

Injuries and Investigation

Deputies arrived to find a “heavily damaged” vehicle. The children, ranging in age from 2 to 12, were found injured both inside and outside the wreckage. While Winston and five of the children were treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries, an 11-year-old girl remains in critical condition as of Monday.

During the investigation, deputies suspected Winston was under the influence. Hospital staff later reported that her blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit and that she tested positive for unspecified controlled substances.

Prior History

This is not Winston’s first recent run-in with traffic law. She was already scheduled to appear in court this Tuesday regarding a separate vehicle crash from November 2024. Records also show her license was revoked or suspended in 2013, before being reinstated.

Winston is scheduled to face the new charges in court on February 25.
