Spigot Shut: Feds Freeze Minnesota Childcare Cash In Fraud Crackdown; Walz Fires Back

The flow of federal childcare dollars to Minnesota has come to a screeching halt, igniting a fierce public battle between the Trump administration and Governor Tim Walz.

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) officials confirmed the immediate funding freeze this week, citing an urgent need to investigate “rampant fraud” within the state’s payment systems. The move has triggered a wave of federal activity in the state, with Homeland Security investigators reportedly knocking on doors and inspecting daycare sites.

“We have turned off the money spigot and we are finding the fraud,” announced Deputy HHS Secretary Jim O’Neal. He stated that the administration has activated a new “Defend the Spend” protocol to scrutinize payments, warning that “bad actors” would be held accountable regardless of their position.

The crackdown comes amid growing scrutiny of Minnesota’s state-funded programs. Federal agents are investigating allegations that millions in taxpayer money have been funneled to daycare centers and clinics that don’t actually provide the services they bill for.

The probe gained traction after viral reports—including one from an independent watchdog—exposed a funded facility that appeared completely empty and featured a sign with the word “Learning” misspelled.

Governor Walz, who is currently running for a third term, wasted no time in condemning the freeze. He dismissed the federal intervention as a calculated political stunt designed to hurt the state’s safety net rather than fix it.

“This is Trump’s long game,” Walz said in a statement. He argued that his administration has spent years working to root out fraudsters independently, accusing the President of “politicizing the issue to defund programs that help Minnesotans.”

The standoff shows no sign of cooling down.

HHS is now demanding a comprehensive audit from Walz’s office—requiring the handover of attendance records, licenses, and inspection logs—before the financial pipeline is reopened.
