LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Just before 3:00 AM on Thursday, a routine patrol in Cape Coral turned into a dramatic water rescue. A Florida Highway Patrol State Trooper was driving along Del Prado Boulevard near SE 15th Terrace when he spotted a Malinois running alone down the sidewalk.
The dog, seemingly spooked or lost, led the trooper on a brief chase down SW 16th Street. After darting between several houses, the animal jumped directly into a saltwater canal.
The trooper tracked the sound of the dog whining and found it struggling to stay afloat in the dark water.
Acting quickly, the trooper found a length of rope and fashioned a makeshift slip lead. He managed to guide the dog toward a nearby floating dock, but the rescue took an unexpected turn. While leaning over to pull the animal to safety, the trooper lost his footing and took a tumble into the canal himself.

Despite the accidental dip, the trooper successfully hauled the dog out of the water. Once both were back on solid ground, the dog was transported to a local veterinary clinic for a check-up and a much-needed bath.
Staff at the clinic have temporarily named the dog “K9 Valor” in honor of the “bravery displayed while facing adversity.”
While Lee County Animal Control has been notified to help locate a possible owner, the trooper and vet staff are continuing to look after the dog.
Florida Highway Patrol released a statement following the incident, noting that their troopers are always ready to serve, “whether it’s protecting people or saving those with paws!”
