“Squawk Box” Joe Kernen Grills Virginia Senator On Dem Silence During Obama Deportations

A discussion on immigration enforcement turned volatile Monday when CNBC’s Joe Kernen challenged Virginia Senator Mark Warner over the Democratic Party’s current stance on ICE, questioning why similar outrage was absent during the Obama administration’s historic deportation numbers.

The confrontation on “Squawk Box” unfolded against the backdrop of rising tensions following the death of Renee Good in Minneapolis. Good was shot by an ICE officer last Wednesday during a confrontation where authorities say she accelerated her vehicle toward agents.

Warner criticized the agency’s current direction, alleging that ICE has shifted focus from criminals to filling “quotas” by targeting law-abiding undocumented immigrants.

“Seventy-five percent of the people, no criminal record… have masked ICE agents picking up moms, dropping off kids or folks going to work,” Warner said. “I don’t think that’s what the American people signed up for.”

Kernen pushed back, suggesting political hypocrisy in enforcing federal law. He noted that former President Barack Obama oversaw millions of deportations during his tenure without facing the same level of internal resistance from his party.

“Barack Obama, your guy… it was five million over eight years. Now we’re at 350,000. What changed with Democrats?” Kernen asked. “Is it about votes?”

The host further pressed Warner on the legality of local efforts to obstruct federal agents. “You would agree that going city to city to try to disrupt authorities from lawfully executing whatever their job is… That’s against the law,” Kernen argued.

Warner maintained that while border security is necessary, the current administration’s methods are flawed. He pointed to a reduction in training protocols, claiming ICE training was cut to just 47 days—a move he attributed to Donald Trump being the 47th president rather than operational efficiency.

“Tell me that’s a rational approach,” Warner challenged.

Kernen declined to defend the specific training timeline but hammered the point that the election results signaled a clear voter preference for tighter borders. “You wouldn’t have lost the presidency in seven swing states… So you don’t know what people were voting for,” he said.

Data released in December by the Department of Homeland Security indicates that during Trump’s second term, the agency has carried out over 605,000 deportations, while border crossings dropped to record lows in July following emergency declarations and the resumption of wall construction.

The exchange comes as protests continue over the death of Renee Good.

Bodycam footage released Friday appears to show Good refusing commands to exit her vehicle. The video captures her accelerating as the officer stood nearby, with a passenger in the car reportedly shouting, “drive baby, drive,” moments before the shooting occurred.
