ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – St. Petersburg residents looking to reclaim some garage space have a chance to safely ditch their old paints, oils, and garden chemicals soon. The city has scheduled a massive household hazardous waste collection drive for Saturday, March 7.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the St. Petersburg College Gibbs Campus, located at 6605 5th Avenue North.

City officials organized the event specifically to keep dangerous materials out of the regular trash stream. When items like pool chemicals or signal flares end up in standard garbage trucks or landfills, they can cause fires or leak toxins into the local water supply.

By bringing these items to the college campus, residents can hand them over to trained professionals who specialize in environmentally friendly disposal and recycling.

The list of what you can bring is fairly extensive. Workers will be on-site to take everything from old antifreeze and gasoline to mercury-containing thermometers and rechargeable batteries. If you have leftover lawn fertilizers, household cleaners, or stacks of old paint cans sitting in the shed, this is the time to load them up.

The event is free for local residents, though it’s always a good idea to keep liquids in their original containers or label them clearly to help the intake crew move things along quickly. This collection helps ensure that the materials that keep our homes running don’t end up harming the Florida landscape we all enjoy.
