ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The St. Petersburg Police Department (SPPD) is launching a High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) campaign focused on improving safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists on some of the city’s most traveled and dangerous roadways.
This initiative is part of a statewide effort and is funded by a $76,940 contract running from November 2025 through May 2026.
The special safety operations will begin on Tuesday, November 4, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., on 34th Street between 5th Avenue South and 3rd Avenue North. This busy corridor is just one of several areas the SPPD will target over the next several months.
The enforcement and educational efforts will concentrate on the following high-priority roadways:
- 34th Street North and South
- 4th Street North and South
- 18th Avenue South
- 16th Street South
- 3rd Street North
- US 19/5th Avenue North
- 49th Street North
The need for increased enforcement is highlighted by the persistent dangers on Pinellas County’s roads. Pinellas County ranks in the top 25 counties in the state for traffic crashes that result in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists.
While year-to-date figures show a slight decrease in tragic incidents compared to the previous year—with four pedestrian fatalities versus seven in 2024, and three bicycle fatalities versus four in 2024—the numbers remain concerning.
The SPPD aims to bring these figures down further by increasing police presence to raise awareness and compliance with traffic laws designed to protect vulnerable road users.
