ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A late-night confrontation in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg turned deadly early Monday morning, triggering a homicide investigation as detectives hunt for a shooter on the loose.
According to police, a fight broke out shortly before 3 a.m. near the busy intersection of 1st Avenue North and Beach Drive Northeast. The altercation escalated rapidly, ending when a man in his late 20s was shot.
Officers patrolling the area rushed to the scene immediately after receiving reports of gunfire and discovered the wounded man on the street. Emergency rescue crews quickly transported him to a local hospital, but medical staff could not save him. He succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

Authorities are withholding the victim’s identity until his family can be reached and notified.
As of Monday afternoon, investigators have not released a description of the shooter, and the suspect remains at large. Police are actively scouring the area for witnesses and surveillance footage.
