ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — St. Petersburg residents will have a dedicated drop-off site next month to get rid of old chemicals, automotive fluids, and other toxic household items that cannot go into standard curbside bins.
The city is hosting a household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pinellas Technical College – St. Petersburg, located at 901 34th St. S.
The event is designed to keep dangerous materials out of the regular municipal waste stream. Trained personnel will be stationed on-site to collect items and ensure they are processed in an environmentally safe manner.
City officials noted that disposing of these products in standard household trash creates serious fire risks and environmental hazards.
Items accepted during the event include:
- Automotive fluids, including gasoline, motor oil, and antifreeze
- Household chemicals and cleaning agents
- Lawn, garden, and pool/spa chemicals
- Paint products
- Mercury-containing devices
- Rechargeable batteries
- Signal flares
