ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A local teenager lost his life early Sunday morning when a high-speed attempt to pass another car ended in a fatal collision on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North.
The St. Petersburg Police Department reported that the incident occurred just after midnight on May 3rd. According to investigators, 18-year-old Angel Burke was behind the wheel of a red Dodge Charger, heading southbound toward 70th Avenue North around 12:30 a.m.
The situation turned tragic when Burke tried to overtake another vehicle. Police say he lost control of the Charger on the rain-slicked pavement.

The car began to slide sideways, eventually skidding off the road. The driver’s side of the vehicle struck a tree with heavy force directly in front of a home at 6818 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North.
First responders arrived on the scene shortly after the impact, but there was nothing they could do. Burke, a St. Petersburg resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released further details regarding whether other factors contributed to the crash.
