ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith joined Democratic strategist James Carville on Thursday for an episode of the “Politics War Room” podcast, where the two media figures discussed their shared approach to public discourse.

During the exchange, Smith expressed a long-standing personal affinity for Carville, even while acknowledging the strategist’s reputation for volatile outbursts. Smith told Carville that he related to him because neither man is intimidated by a challenge.

“I know who I am. I know what I stand for,” Smith said during the episode. “I know that I support my community. I know that I support an abundance of communities out there, and I’m rooting for America always, all the time. So, folks don’t scare me at all.”

Smith argued that direct, sometimes aggressive communication is necessary to address the nation’s current state of polarization. “Sometimes you got to get in people’s you know what and let them know what the hell they need to do to get stuff straight so all of us in America can live together as one,” he added.

Addressing Carville directly, Smith noted that he respected the strategist’s willingness to be confrontational.

“I’m not scared of that challenge one bit,” Smith continued. “And you’ve never been either, which is why I’ve always had love for you, James, even though I think you’re crazy half the time.”

The cordial podcast appearance follows a period of tension between the two. Carville has made headlines recently for a series of erratic, profanity-laced attacks directed at President Donald Trump during his second term. In a Politicon video released in February ahead of the State of the Union address, Carville delivered what he called a “personal message” to the president. “I have a personal message for Donald John Trump,” Carville said in the video. “And you sit still, you son of a bi**h, when I’m telling you this. I’m going to tell you right where you are, you fat sorry sack of sh*t. People hate you. And I’m not just saying this because I don’t like you. I’m saying this because I’m telling you what’s happening to you right now.”

At the time that video was released, Smith was openly critical of Carville’s delivery.

During an episode of his SiriusXM show, “Straight Shooter with Stephen A.,” Smith questioned Carville’s composure. “Does he seem a bit off the rail right now? Judge for yourself,” Smith told his audience before playing the clip. Upon hearing the barrage of insults, Smith reacted with visible disbelief, eventually ordering his producers to “cut this off.”

While Smith has consistently maintained respect for Carville’s decades-long career in political consulting, he previously argued that such rhetoric is largely ineffective in the current political climate.

Reflecting on the clip during his SiriusXM broadcast, Smith asked his listeners, “What the hell is wrong with people!? I cannot believe this!”

Despite those past criticisms, the two men appeared to find common ground during Thursday’s podcast regarding their mutual refusal to back down from public controversy.
