Stolen Cruiser And A State-Wide Scour: Multi-Agency Tennessee Manhunt Ends For Jail Escapee

The multi-day search for a fugitive ended in handcuffs Saturday after 59-year-old Gerald Thomas “Pete” Samples was taken back into custody following an escape from the Crockett County Jail.

Samples, who was featured on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s (TBI) Most Wanted list, was the subject of an intense search involving the TBI, the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), and local deputies.

The incident began on Wednesday morning at approximately 4:40 a.m. when Samples managed to flee the county facility. Authorities confirmed that during his escape, the inmate also stole a law enforcement cruiser.

At the time of his flight, Samples had been held for seven months pending extradition to Virginia, where he faces 13 counts related to the sexual exploitation of children and the solicitation of a minor aged 15 or younger.

Law enforcement shifted into high gear immediately following the breach.

The TBI and U.S. Marshals combined to offer a $3,500 reward for information, while residents in the Gibson Wells community were urged to search storm shelters and outbuildings for any sign of the 6-foot-2, 220-pound man. The urgency was heightened by Samples’ criminal history, which included a previous escape on his record from 2020.

The manhunt concluded after a joint effort between several agencies tracked Samples down. While specific details of the capture were not immediately released, the U.S. Marshals Service praised the inter-agency communication that led to the arrest.

“U.S. Marshals always stand ready to assist our partners in catching escapees,” Marshal Tyreece Miller said in a statement following the apprehension. “Thanks to great teamwork and commitment by multiple law enforcement agencies, Crockett County escaped inmate Gerald Thomas Samples is back in custody where he belongs.”

Samples now faces additional charges of felony escape and vehicle theft in Crockett County on top of his existing warrants in Virginia.
