Street Fight Turns Deadly: Second Suspect Busted In Fatal Downtown St. Petersburg Shooting

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A second man is behind bars following a late-night argument that escalated into a fatal shooting on 1st Avenue North last month.

St. Petersburg Police investigators arrested 36-year-old Matthew Williams today in connection with the May 25th death of Peter-Austin Afentakis, 27. Williams faces a wave of serious charges, including second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and violation of probation.

Williams is the second person arrested in the case. Earlier this week, police jailed 25-year-old Jacob Carreras and charged him with second-degree murder for his alleged role in the same killing.

According to detectives, the violence erupted shortly before 3 a.m. outside in the 100 block of 1st Avenue North. Investigators say Carreras and Williams got into a verbal dispute with Afentakis. The argument turned physical when both suspects opened fire, shooting at Afentakis.

Afentakis later died from his injuries at a local hospital. A second unnamed victim suffered minor injuries during the incident.

Police have released Williams’ booking photo, and authorities confirm that the investigation remains active.
