The state of Florida is launching a formal investigation into Major League Baseball over allegations that the league selectively enforces its uniform policies to crack down on Christian expressions while openly allowing secular and social justice messaging.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the probe after issuing an investigative subpoena to the league, giving baseball executives a deadline of July 23, 2026, to turn over extensive internal documents and enforcement records.
The legal clash stems from recent warnings MLB issued to three San Francisco Giants pitchers, including Landen Roupp. The players had etched Bible verses on their caps during the team’s “Pride Night” events. The specific verses referenced Genesis 9:12-16, which details God’s covenant with humanity and the rainbow as its sign.
Major League Baseball defended the warnings, stating the players’ actions violated long-standing uniform regulations that strictly prohibit any writing on apparel or equipment, regardless of what the message says. The league maintained that these warnings were completely consistent with its normal, everyday practices.
However, the Florida Attorney General’s office challenges that narrative. Legal documents from the state point to a documented history where MLB either explicitly approved or simply ignored similar uniform modifications for causes it favored. The state’s inquiry highlights previous instances where players and teams utilized Black Lives Matter sleeve patches, “United for Change” messaging, social justice statements on cleats, and even custom etchings on the pitcher’s mound without facing disciplinary warnings.
“Major League Baseball claims it does not tolerate discrimination based on religion, yet its actions tell a different story,” Attorney General Uthmeier said in a statement. “If MLB applauds ideological messages it prefers while reprimanding expressions of Christian faith, that is not neutral rule enforcement—it is religious discrimination that cannot stand in Florida.”
The state is executing the probe under both the Florida Civil Rights Act and the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. To determine if the league’s enforcement is genuinely neutral or actively biased, the subpoena demands that MLB hand over its complete uniform and equipment rules alongside the exact provisions used against the Giants pitchers.
Furthermore, Florida is forcing the league to disclose its entire uniform enforcement history dating back to 2020. This data must contrast every instance where a player was warned or disciplined for apparel markings against every instance where secular, social justice, or religious markings were allowed to pass without league action.
The state is also targeting MLB’s internal communications. The subpoena covers all internal deliberations regarding the June 2026 warnings, any complaints received by the league office, and compliance analyses related to MLB’s own anti-discrimination code. Investigators are looking closely at policies regarding “Pride Night” and other themed apparel, specifically searching for any adverse actions or consequences taken against personnel who chose not to participate due to their religious beliefs.
Because the investigation is anchored in Florida law, the subpoena specifically commands MLB to produce these records for all relevant players and personnel across the state. This includes the Miami Marlins, the Tampa Bay Rays, and the fifteen Grapefruit League spring training clubs that operate facilities throughout Florida. The Attorney General’s office concluded its announcement by stating it will take all necessary legal steps to protect the religious liberties of players and employees working within state borders.
