The spirit of giving is officially rolling across the Sunshine State as the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) launch their annual “Stuff the Charger” food drive. This statewide campaign encourages Floridians to donate non-perishable food items to support local food banks and bring relief and holiday cheer to families facing hardship.

Running from now until November 30, the initiative aims to harness the generosity and resilience of Florida’s communities, making a significant impact on hunger this holiday season.

FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner emphasized the drive’s mission, saying, “By loading our Chargers with food donations, we are delivering hope into Florida homes and helping families embrace the holiday season with dignity and joy.”

The “Stuff the Charger” campaign relies on strong partnerships with local organizations dedicated to fighting hunger. Residents are encouraged to bring their non-perishable food items to any local FHP Station or the FLHSMV General Headquarters in Tallahassee.

FHP troop headquarters across the state will also be hosting various events to accept donations.

Organizers have provided a list of high-need items that can make the biggest difference:

  • Canned Goods: Canned meats, vegetables, fruits, and soups.
  • Dried Goods: Stuffing, boxed potatoes, rice, cornbread mix, grits, cereal, and oatmeal.
  • Other Goods: Nuts, peanut butter, evaporated milk, bottled water, and broth.

Every item donated, from a single can of soup to a box of pasta, is described by the agencies as carrying “the power to ease someone’s burden and offer hope to a neighbor in need.” The collective goal is to make this year’s drive the most impactful yet, reinforcing the message that no Floridian family should be left behind.

FHP Colonel Gary Howze said, “Your donations are essential in helping provide food to families in need, and together we can ensure that no Floridian goes without during this special time of year.”

Anyone wishing to donate food can take their contributions to any local FHP Station or contact their local FHP Public Affairs Officer for more information.
