Subpoenas Fly In Brennan Probe As DOJ Pushes For Grand Jury Answers

The Department of Justice has escalated its investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan, issuing subpoenas to senior intelligence and law enforcement officials to testify before a grand jury.

This move follows a significant shift in the probe’s leadership, with CBS News reporting that the DOJ directed a Trump-aligned attorney to take over the case.

The investigation focuses on whether Brennan provided false statements to Congress regarding his role in the 2016 Russia-Trump campaign inquiries.

Sources indicate the FBI recently ramped up its efforts, specifically looking at Brennan’s involvement in crafting the assessment that initially suggested links between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

The leadership shakeup included the removal of a top prosecutor who reportedly argued that the evidence was insufficient to build a case. Neither the DOJ nor the FBI has issued a formal response to requests for comment on these recent developments.

Brennan’s actions have been under the microscope for years. In 2020, U.S. Attorney John Durham questioned Brennan for eight hours during a review that eventually concluded the FBI used “uncorroborated intelligence” to kickstart its 2016 probe.

By 2025, Brennan faced renewed scrutiny alongside former FBI Director James Comey concerning the handling of the Steele dossier. That investigation was triggered after CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred allegations of misconduct to FBI Director Kash Patel.

In October 2025, the House Judiciary Committee formally referred Brennan to the DOJ for criminal prosecution, alleging he lied to lawmakers during a May 2023 hearing.

“In sum, Brennan’s testimony before the Committee on May 11, 2023, was a brazen attempt to knowingly and willfully testify falsely and fictitiously to material facts,” Committee Chair Jim Jordan stated in the referral. “We therefore make this referral for the Department to examine whether any of Brennan’s testimony warrants a charge for the violation of federal law.”

The current grand jury subpoenas mark a transition from a preliminary review to a more formal legal proceeding as the DOJ seeks sworn testimony from those within the intelligence community who worked alongside Brennan.
