SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A Bushnell man faces a lifetime behind bars after a Sumter County jury returned a swift guilty verdict this week, closing a harrowing chapter for two young victims. Brian Keith Winton, 48, sat stoically in Judge Mary P. Hatcher’s courtroom as the clerk read out a series of convictions that will likely see him spend the rest of his natural life in a state penitentiary.

The legal proceedings followed a dark trail of evidence that began with an investigation by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office in late 2023. Winton was ultimately convicted on three counts of sexual battery on a child under 12 and four counts of lewd and lascivious molestation.

The details revealed during the trial painted a grim picture of betrayal; the two victims, who were as young as 10 when the abuse started, testified to a cycle of violence and misconduct that spanned four years.

What bolstered the prosecution’s case—and likely led to the jury’s quick decision—was the consistency of the victims’ accounts. During separate interviews with authorities, both children provided granular, specific details of the incidents.

These disclosures gave detectives the probable cause needed to move forward with an arrest in October 2023. When investigators eventually sat Winton down for an interview, the case took a definitive turn. After being read his Miranda rights, Winton reportedly admitted to the crimes against both children, a confession that became a cornerstone of Assistant State Attorney Shelby Senn’s prosecution.

Following the reading of the verdict, Winton was immediately taken into custody. He is currently being held without bond while awaiting a mandatory presentence investigation.

This step allows the court to review the defendant’s history and the impact on the victims before a final sentence is handed down. Investigator Pam Warren, whose work was cited as instrumental to the case, stood by as the proceedings concluded, marking the end of a long road toward accountability for the Bushnell community.
