Surprise Truce: Trump And Walz Agree To ‘Cool Down’ Tensions In Minnesota

After weeks of angry clashes and legal threats, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and President Donald Trump seem to have found common ground.

The Governor’s office announced that President Trump is considering removing some federal immigration officers from the state. This comes after a phone call between the two leaders that Trump described as “very good.”

For the last few weeks, at least 2,000 federal agents have surged into Minnesota as part of a deportation operation. The situation turned violent, resulting in protests and two fatal shootings by agents.

However, the recent phone call suggests a change in strategy. Governor Walz asked the President to work with the state rather than against it. According to the Governor’s statement, Trump agreed to look into reducing the number of agents and coordinating better on catching violent criminals.

Trump backed this up on his social media platform, Truth Social. He wrote that he and the Democrat governor appeared to be on a “similar wavelength.”

“The Governor, very respectfully, understood that, and I will be speaking to him in the near future,” Trump wrote.

To manage this shift, Trump is sending Border Czar Tom Homan to Minnesota. Homan previously led Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Trump stated that Homan will report directly to him and focus on arresting “the worst of the worst” criminals.

This move seems to replace the previous strategy led by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Chief Greg Bovino. Their approach had faced heavy criticism after agents shot and killed a 37-year-old protester named Pretti on Saturday, and Renee Good, who was shot in her car earlier this month.

While Secretary Noem initially called Pretti’s actions “domestic terrorism,” other administration officials quickly walked that back. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche told Fox News that the incident was a violent altercation, but not terrorism.

President Trump told the Wall Street Journal that he is “reviewing everything” regarding the shootings and has agreed to impartial investigations.

Meanwhile, Governor Walz is hoping this agreement brings relief to Minneapolis.

“We want calm and peace and normalcy back to our lives,” Walz said on Saturday. “They want chaos.”

With a federal judge currently deciding if the surge of agents is legal, both sides appear ready to lower the temperature for now.
