A verbal altercation outside a St. Petersburg venue escalated to gunfire early Monday morning, leaving one man dead and another facing a second-degree murder charge.
The incident occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m. on May 25 in the 100 block of 1st Avenue North. According to investigators with the St. Petersburg Police Department, Jacob Carreras, 25, and Peter-Austin Afentakis, 29, became involved in a verbal argument on the street.
During the dispute, Carreras allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot at Afentakis. The victim sustained critical injuries and later died.
Following the shooting, St. Petersburg detectives secured a warrant for Carreras’s arrest. Members of the U.S. Marshals Service located and apprehended Carreras in neighboring Hillsborough County. Authorities confirmed that he will be extradited back to Pinellas County to face the formal charge of second-degree murder.
Local police officials noted that the investigation remains open and active as they continue to piece together the events leading up to the gunfire.
