Suspect Charged With Murder in Crash That Killed Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Corporal

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office detectives have established probable cause to charge the suspect involved in Monday evening’s fatal crash that killed Master Corporal Brian LaVigne.

Master Corporal LaVigne was set to retire this week. He was 54 years old. He is survived by his wife, and two adult children, one of whom is also a deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Travis Zachary Gabriel Garrett, 28, is charged with the following crimes: 

  • First Degree Felony Murder
  • DUI Manslaughter
  • Vehicular Homicide
  • Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer (2 counts)
  • Resisting Arrest with Violence (2 counts)
  • Felony Criminal Mischief
  • Aggravated Fleeing to Elude

“This is one of the most difficult times we have faced as a Sheriff’s Office, losing one of our family members to such a senseless act of violence,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “We continue to mourn this loss with both the LaVigne family, our Sheriff’s Office family, and our community. Our focus remains intent on seeking justice for the murder of Master Corporal LaVigne, and celebrating an individual who devoted his life to public service. While our dedicated team shares a great sense of pain and sorrow, we remain committed to protecting and serving.
