State Sen. Meg Loughran Cappel and her family are safe after the incident in Shorewood; police have one person in custody.
A suspect has been taken into custody after a shot was fired at the home of Illinois State Sen. Meg Loughran Cappel on Tuesday, the Democratic lawmaker confirmed in a statement. The incident, which occurred at her home in the Chicago suburb of Shorewood, left Cappel and her family unharmed.
“My family and I are safe and I’m thankful that no one was hurt,” Loughran Cappel said in a statement released Wednesday. “We are fully cooperating with law enforcement as they continue their investigation.”
The Shorewood Police Department posted on social media Tuesday that an individual had been detained in connection with two shootings carried out with the same weapon. While the department did not explicitly name Loughran Cappel’s home as one of the locations, the timing of the statements suggests a connection.
“We will release more information when it is available, but for now residents can be assured that there is no further threat from this person,” the police statement said.
Loughran Cappel, who represents the 49th district, which includes cities like Joliet and Naperville, thanked local law enforcement for their swift action. “At times like these, I am reminded of how precious peace and safety are in our communities. Violence is never the answer,” she added.
The name of the suspect has not been released, and the motive for the shooting remains unclear.
The incident is the latest in a series of alarming events involving political figures and rising political violence. The heightened threats against elected officials and their families have been a growing concern for authorities.
This comes amid a national climate where political leaders from both sides of the aisle have been calling for an end to political violence and a de-escalation of rhetoric. The recent killings of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, have further underscored the urgency of the issue.
Loughran Cappel’s office and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office have been reached for comment, with the investigation ongoing.
